My Career : A Psychiatrist.
Nature of Work:
Psychiatrists are specially trained doctors who diagnose and treat people with mental and emotional disorders. In order to become a psychiatrist you need to have special skills some of which include strong interpersonal skills, you need to be a good communicator, trustworthy and patient.
Main Duties:
Psychiatrists have a lot of main responsibilities. Psychiatrists diagnose problems, prescribe medicine, keep records, Have patients hospitalized if necessary some may even specialize in an area such as child or forensic psychiatry.
Working Conditions:
There are no gender or physical requirements. Psychiatrists usually work in either clinical settings or hospitals. Some psychiatrists even open their own practice. Psychiatrists work long hours most of them work 60 hours a week. There are a few hazards and risks some of which are Challenged social interactions can be a difficulty for psychiatrists and losing patients to suicide can be very emotionally hard for psychiatrists.
Wages:
The average amount wage psychiatrists make are 125,297$ a year. With more experience comes more money the average high amount of money a psychiatrist makes is 329,239$ a year. Psychiatrists receive a large amount of benefits. Self-employed psychiatrists can set their own schedules can choose what cases to take and work at their own pace . psychiatrists working for a business receive the same benefits to which all doctors receive. Most psychiatrists receive health insurance for medical, dental, vision, life and disability, malpractice coverage, vacation, sick leave and holidays.

Psychiatrists can find jobs quite easily. Then can start working at places such as clinics, hospitals or they can even start their own practice. There is security for working psychiatrists there is and always will be a need for psychiatrists. The outlook for psychiatrists in the future is very good. Their is actually a shortage of psychiatrists in Canada. Therefore, there is a need for them.

Education training for being a psychiatrist is long. I will have to complete 3- 4 years of medical school and then I will have to take a course called psychiatry which is 4 years.Both of the programs I want to take are in UBC. The cost to become a psychiatrist is high. UBC is a very good and expensive school and studying and going to the medical field is also very expensive. I will also need a licence to practice medicine in British Columbia.

In order to become a psychiatrist I will need to start thinking about what classes I need to take now. I will need to take Biology and Physics 11/12. I will also need to take Computers both years. I will need to take Geometry in grade 12.
Work Experience/ Volunteer Experience / External Courses:
While I am studying to become a psychiatrist I will begin to volunteer and help at hospitals and clinics near me. I will work as an intern in hospitals and clinics. I will also help psychiatrist who have started their own practice. Hopefully this will help me understand what it truly is like being a psychiatrist. This will also help me decide if I would rather start my own business or work at a hospital or clinic.
